Chiefs add free-agent Santos

The Kansas City Chiefs, who had the best draft of anyone this weekend, continue to knock the ball out of the park.  Sources close to the club said the Chiefs reached agreement with undrafted free-agent quarterback Ricky Santos, who completed 69 percent of his passes at the University of New Hampshire and threw for 126 touchdowns in his career. Most clubs had Santos as a high-priority free agent, knocking him down because of his size. Santos was the league's CCA co-Offensive Player of the Year last season with Delaware's Joe Flacco. Flacco was drafted with the 18th pick; Santos was not drafted, period. The difference? Flacco has a bigger arm and bigger body. But Santos has productivity you can't ignore and could be a steal.

Hallelujah! A short first round

Score another one for Roger Goodell. The first round of the NFL draft took three hours, 30 minutes, or just about three hours fewer than last year's first round. Goodell can take a bow. After suffering through last year's first round he resolved to shorten the draft, and the results speak for themselves. The first round was the quickest since the 1990 first round that took three hours, 24 minutes.

Jets interested in Ryan?

The most interesting thing I heard this morning was that the New York Jets might be on to quarterback Matt Ryan. The Jets choose sixth, which is two places ahead of Baltimore which desperately wants Ryan. According to one guy I trust, the Jets have all but given up on Kellen Clemens and are looking for their next franchise quarterback. That would jibe with what I heard at the owners' meetings when I asked coach Eric Mangini about Chad Pennington, and he said Pennington would go into camp with as much a chance of winning the starter's job as Clemens. Say what? That told me there was no conviction about Clemens, and his future -- apparently, that's accurate. That doesn't mean the Jets take Ryan, of course, but if they do don't say you weren't warned.

69 reasons to watch Vikes' Allen

You gotta love Jared Allen. On second thought, maybe not. In a piece of trivia that may interest only me Allen had every contract figure in his new deal with the Vikings reflect his own personal signature. According to people who should know, every figure in the contract ends with Allen's number 69. Clever, huh? Now if he just produces 69 sacks.

Finally, Walsh to meet with Pats

So the NFL is scheduled to meet with Matt Walsh next month. I think I speak for all 32 teams when I say, "Hallelujah." I wasn't sure what would be longer: Waiting for a Matt Walsh sighting or the end of the Pennsylvania Democractic primary. Anyway, it's time the league closed the chapter on Spygate, and the stakes here are clear: If the league finds the Patriots were guilty of more videotaping -- whcih they insist they're not -- then Bill Belichick must be suspended indefinitely; if the league finds the Patriots are innocent of all charges then it can put this to rest and move on. I wouldn't know Mat
